To perform a broad range of financial transactions, accounting and analysis responsibilities for the International Writing Program to assure effective and compliant operations.
Financial Oversight and Budgeting:
- May assist with reviewing unit budget information.
- Assist with creating, reviewing and monitoring grant budgets, and processing no-cost extensions and cost sharing accounts.
- Monitor accounts/expenditures and reconcile TDR statements.
- Assist with the preparation of accounting reports and other financial information for the department.
Financial Reporting:
Complete basic and some complex recurring reconciliations and reporting including quarterly and final financial reports for grant accounts.
Assist with month-end and year-end accounting/reporting.
Financial Analysis and Planning:
- Utilize generally accepted accounting standards.
- May contribute to implementation of policies and procedures related to accounting and reporting standards.
- Maintain records of documentation and accounting transactions.
- Coordinate and monitor program to ensure it is in compliance with grant/funder and university guidelines.
- Initiate original and correcting journal entries using the Web CV or Pay CV systems.
- Process and monitor payments, short-term appointments, and honoraria in accordance with Accounts Payable and HR guidelines.
- Cash Handling responsibilities in compliance with International Writing Program Cash Handling Procedures.
- Initiate trip requests and cash advances.
- Process Routing Forms through the UIRIS systems for new grant submissions.
- May review and approve routine transactions.
- Work with Grant Accounting to open/close accounts.
- May provide functional direction or supervision for assigned staff and assist with providing training.
Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.
Education Requirement
- A Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Related administrative, accounting and program experience (typically six months to one year) is required, including preparing and monitoring grant budgets, and preparing financial reports.
- Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors is required.
- Working knowledge and evidence of success in organizing and planning tasks, maintaining attention to detail and in meeting deadlines is required.
- Extensive knowledge of, and ability to use computer software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets and database software is required.
- Demonstrated success in training and developing staff; providing constructive performance, feedback and appraisals; and taking appropriate corrective action to address performance and conduct issues is required.
- Demonstrated extensive proficiency in the ability to work with variety of individuals and groups in a constructive manner while appreciating the unique contribution of diverse individuals is required.
- Working knowledge and experience with processing international financial transactions including wire transfers, processing employment eligibility verification forms, and monitoring DOS grants and budgets is highly desired.
Some knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations is desired.
